Making Documentary about Ukrainian Tech Ecosystem in Wartime: From Idea to Implementation

Last week Canadian content producers from Toronto, Dan Herman, and Chase Kaiser, visited Ukraine to spotlight the Ukrainian tech ecosystem in wartime and shed light on it, representing a documentary for a global audience.

“During the Collision conference in Toronto, we invited Dan to visit our country in order to film the IT ecosystem and show its resilience despite the war,” – comments Pavlo Kartashov, CEO of the Ukrainian Startup Fund.

«Winning the war is only half the battle and Ukraine will need to the world to remain engaged as it rebuilds. I decided I wanted to contribute to that long-term aspect, however I could», — notes Dan Herman.  He is a former executive director of innovation policy at the Government of Canada and an advisor to governments around the world on innovation policy. In 2021, Herman and Kaiser traveled the world to film a documentary series on national startup ecosystems.

Despite the challenges and difficult conditions, in late September, Dan and Chase arrived in Kyiv, where they met with the USF team and began filming.

As part of the project, it was possible to communicate with key players of the Ukrainian technology industry, startups and founders of IT companies.

Moreover, during the visit to Ukraine, the producers visited the IT-Arena in Lviv and were convinced by their own experience that the Ukrainian technological community continues to work and develop.

The Ukrainian Startup Fund is grateful to everyone who took part in the making of the documentary.

Details about the release of the film will be announced soon.
